Day 6 on my own
Today Peg dropped me off, I packed the Kayak and Peg headed to my brothers home in Ocala. The day started normal, hot, slight wind and sunny, with the chance of rain mid afternoon. Things went well until I got to St. Lucie inlet. I got past the crazy boat drivers and stayed on the

Day 5 Turtle day
Today was a hot day and I was fighting the tide most of the day. But that is just part of the experience I guess. It was just a short 15 mile day but it took a lot out of me for some reason. However, I did like what I saw today, nice houses, some

Day 3 – great weather and long paddle
Today was much like yesterday, great weather (just too hot 86), low traffic and a long paddle (20.4 miles). This puts me ahead of schedule but I am sure that will be eaten up somewhere. It was great today that the tide was with me all the way. Tides are funny and you have to

Day 2 a much better day
Todays weather was better – less wind but much warmer, reaching 86 and that made me melt. I was able to have a faster day (same distance almost an hour faster) because there was less traffic and less waves/wakes to deal with. I was also able to stay dryer than yesterday, so not as sticky

This brought back so many memories of my first trip down – as soon as my older brother and I were old enough – middle school – my Dad fulfilled his lifelong dream of paddling the Allagash – we put it in on one of the upper lakes. First memories are us all sleeping under one tarp – no tent – waking up with 1000 mosquitoes perched right over our faces. And also catching dozens of brook trout into the evening on what became bare hooks – at a stream coming in. While we were dragged on this of course I ended up with several boats, doing tons of whitewater and canoe trips through out my life – and now have the light Souris River kevlar/fiberglass 17 so I can keep going alone in my old age – now 71. Ended up on one of my parents 3 week arctic trips before grad school back in 1977. Every time my Dad saw another person on a trip in Maine he would go 100 miles further north and that’s how he got to the arctic. My older sister and husband have continued to do dozens of them.
