Day 9 June 15th 2024

After returning the boat we went to Montezuma National Sanctuary:

A sparrow took over a blue bird box – The parents were actively feeding young.

Here are the interior shots from Peg’s phone:

Moving forward – second bed room (bunks) and Closet
Mid ship exit/entrance and Sink for bunk room
2nd head door – in here is a shower as well
Moving forward a bit more, here is some storage and small closet
Forward of the storage space is the dining area – Doubles as a bed for two
Across from the storage area is the galley (kitchen)
Looking forward from the galley
Storage forward of the dining area
The bow of the boat with it’s cover in place. Didn’t see many of these boats without the cover in place. However, this is a nice place to sit at almost anytime.

To the right is one of the Sunflowers competitors. They appear to have AC which the sunflower does not. We were comfortable – actually had to turn on the heater on the 2nd and 3rd night. They too require you to return the boat to where you pick it up. We saw their fleet (about a dozen boats) at Mid Lakes marina.

We enjoyed this trip immensely and recommend it to all. Don’t let your lack of boating experience deter you from trying. I mean you are traveling at the speed of 4.5 miles an hour for the most part. I think we did top out at 5.4mph but only for a short time. The boat handles easily and once you have been at the tiller for a while it is fun. Peg has other shots (specifically of the interior) I plan to post in the near future. But here is a photo log of our adventure.

This is our last time on the boat, it had to be home by 9am. So yesterday we did the chore of pumping out the waste, that actually isn’t as bad as it sounds. We straightened up and packed what we could so this morning we would get an early start. The perfect end to a very nice trip.

More Herons of course

Day 8 June 14th 2024

Here is another interesting feature of Seneca Falls – there is even an “It’s a Wonderful Life” museum in the town.

If you can not read the picture – right click it and open the picture in a new tab. That should make it easier to read.

In Seneca Falls we went shopping at their Christmas shop and had dinner. But we also stopped at one of their museums attached the the boaters facilities.

How the locks work
The progression of barge sizes from right to left. The original canal was only 4 ft deep. Many changes over the years
This canal, through Seneca Falls, is an off shoot of the Erie canal.
The grey house in the middle of the picture of my brothers old home.
Seneca Falls the birthplace of Women’s suffrage.
Once you are at the top and the doors open, off you go
Chapel in Seneca Falls – This chapel was directly across the lake from a house my brother owned.
Sometimes there is a cable you pass your own line around – rather than grabbing their fixed lines.
Then (since we are going up) the water enters the lock.
Lock master and enter the lock – This is a double lock into Seneca Falls
Grab a line to steady the boat in the lock
Great Blue Heron
Traveling through Montezuma Refuge and there were so many birds
Osprey Nest
Eagle Nest

Many locks have fishermen at both the entrance and the exit.

Day 7 June 13th 2024

Finally in Lyons NY
Tow path is now the train bed
Homeless shelter on the tow path
Nice mash area.
Marsh part two
The herons fish the locks by looking for fish trapped in the lock door I-beams.
Leaving the lock – Peg had a hold on the line at the front of the boat (bow). The lines are there for you to keep your boat in proper position.

There were too many clocks to put them all here. They were all very interesting, I would suggest if you go to the find the Newark Public Library where this museum lives and check it out.

Cases of clocks
Closest we came to finding roses. We looked for roses here because The Jackson and Perkins rose company started here in Newark. However the city hasn’t saved any of those roses.
We did find an interesting clock museum.
A short stop at Newark, NY – to look for roses.
Newark Free dock. Towns on the canal are setup to assist boaters. This dock has facilities for boaters including laundry machines.
We didn’t see any, but thanks for the warning
Not even knee deep.
Palmyra NY. free dock
We stopped here on the way up. Nice dock and the building you see is a cafe. There are shower and toilet facilities at this location as well.
Leaving the lock
Onward

You have to keep track of the traffic lights, so you won’t get scolded for trying to enter too early. In the picture below (right) the light is green even though the lock doors are still opening. Most times the light turns green once the doors are completely open. Both of these locks will lower us to the next level. (You can enlarge the pictures by right clicking and opening the image in a new tab.)

First lock of the day. Note the traffic light above the lock dead center.
Second Lock – this time the light is on the right under the light.

Day 6 June 12th 2024

We had too good a time with our friends in Fairport and had to rearrange our itinerary. We stopped at Mid Lakes Marina (very nice place) to hook up electric and stay the night. We need to be on shore power overnight, and we knew we would get to the locks too late (they close @ 6PM). So it will be a longer day Thursday as well as Friday, to be back at the starting point by 9AM Saturday.
