  1. Hi – A lifelong paddler here including a 3 week trip in the Arctic, and lots of whitewater and camping – I was a guide in Algonquin Park Ontario in college. I am envious of this trip! Hopefully not too many windbound days. And speaking of wind, I and some friends several years ago started using kayak paddles in the stern of canoes or when alone especially. My son will never go back to a single blade. There is no J stroke which slows you especially against a wind. You use more muscles which is good – but you are taking more strokes usually and can maybe get tired faster ? Although you can just slow down and paddle less hard of course. It needs to be plenty long – mine is longer than my whitewater paddle. Just a thought. I hope there are rules about wakes where it really could matter but my sailing experience is they slow down from very fast and the wake gets bigger if they dont slow enough. Have fun!!!!

    • Kip I knew who you were without the Cathy reference. 🙂 Thanks for the info. My kayak stroke is a deep stroke, and I turn into every stroke. So I use my core more than my arm stength. I have about a 135 paddle and that works for me very well. I still like the regular paddle for canoeing since canoes tend to be wider. That width doesn’t allow me the stroke I like if I use the kayak paddle. One of my favorite places to paddle is Algonquin. I wish I knew about it sooner. Hope you enjoy following my follies.

      • Hi Doug, Day one in the can! Go, Doug go! So nice to be able to track your progress on the map. (Sorry, I think I mistakenly told Kip you were using a canoe not a kayak!) We’ll be cheering for you!
