Day 6 on my own

Today Peg dropped me off, I packed the Kayak and Peg headed to my brothers home in Ocala.  The day started normal, hot, slight wind and sunny, with the chance of rain mid afternoon.  Things went well until I got to St. Lucie inlet.  I got past the crazy boat drivers and stayed on the waterway.  But just as I got to Bird Island and would be heading towards the Everts Lyons bridge, the winds came out of no where and were strong (20+).  I got it together and back tracked a bit and found a cove behind some new construction.  I got permission to camp here for the night.  The winds were out of this world and the waves were bad.  Safe and sound, I’ll continue in the morning if they subside.  The weather says they will at 8PM.  I am protected from the wind for the most part and enjoying Bear Creek Potato soup for dinner.

  1. Doug, no doubt every intrepid adventurer has both good days and bad. Congratulations on undertaking this journey. When the final chapter is written, and some perspective of the cumulative total is gained, you will have given us all a gift of self-challenge and self-discovery. Be smart. Be safe. And, please keep writing. It is a privilege to peek over your shoulder each day.

  3. You knew there would be challenges along this incredible journey. Glad you’re tucked inland for the night. Is the picture of your hammock? Hoping you no or low winds in the am . Keep your spirits up. 🥰

  4. Was wondering is that high enough for alligators underneath? Not sure if they would just cross under or even bother with you just my thoughts but guess you might’ve contemplated that. I know no food or any smells but still wondering if, just like bear and moose in the north country , you contemplated southern friends. Keep safe and keep on . I love hearing about each day and all the wonders on the water.

    • No I am inches from the ground. I don’t see any problem at this point. I wouldn’t want to be in this area if I was an alligator, too much activity and the home owners associations! Raised myself up some for tonight so they can pass through.

  5. Boss, that a great looking camp site – worthy of Algonquin or Quetico! How did U pack that much gear – does your kayak have an inter-dimensional storage compartment? Use the downtime to rest and recharge.

  6. Boss, well planned and now the tether is cut for a bit. I anticipate you’ll be safe, sensible and manage what gets tossed at ya. The winds likely make frustrating in the short term – but I have no doubt you’ll persevere.

  7. Hi Doug,
Just called Peg to see where you were, no answer, so did a quick search and… Voila! There you are, lagered up in luxury for for the day. At least it’s not cold like it’s been here.
I’ll check in tomorrow, see if you get some fair winds and following seas to get you under way again.

      • Rest easy Doug, no need to blog unless you feel up to it. Remember, this isn’t twitter, where people feel a need to know whether someone took three steps or four steps to the sink to brush their teeth. Just find a groove, settle in, enjoy yourself. This is your experience and you’re not obligated to give minute by minute breathless non-news. Have fun, call/email if you need something.
